Selection Process

The BSSC CGL selection process consists of two crucial stages: the Preliminary Exam and the Mains Exam. Here is a brief overview of each stage:

  1. Preliminary Exam: The Prelims Exam serves as the initial stage for candidates. It is a qualifying objective-type examination that evaluates candidates on their knowledge and understanding of various subjects. The exam is divided into three sections: General Studies, General Science and Mathematics, and Comprehension/Logical Reasoning/Mental Ability. Candidates must clear this stage to proceed to the Mains Exam.
  2. Mains Exam: The Mains Exam is the second stage of the selection process. It consists of two papers: Paper-1 and Paper-2. Paper-1 is centered on the Hindi language, while Paper-2 covers subjects such as General Studies, General Science and Math, and Reasoning Ability. Candidates must secure a minimum of 30% marks in Paper-1 to be eligible for Paper-2. The Mains Exam will evaluate candidates’ knowledge and expertise in the respective subjects.

The final selection is based on the performance of candidates in both the Prelims and Mains Exams. The number of candidates selected for the Mains Exam is generally five times the total number of vacancies, ensuring that only the most competent candidates advance to the subsequent phase of the selection process.
